Measuring an Abalone

California Fish and Game regulations specify red abalone
MUST measure at least seven inches [177.8mm] in the
shell's largest dimension. (Red abs are just about the only
type you find on the North Coast.) What if it's too
small?(see Replacing
a Short)
Using the fixed caliper gauge:
*IMPORTANT NOTE:
It's the shell that counts. (If you measure the abalone and
it just squeeks by because of a barnacle, you could get a
ticket.)
